Bespoke Willow Viking Farewell Ships

Handcrafted by Westcountry Willows, our willow Viking ships are ceremonial vessels designed for carrying cremated remains. They bring together traditional crafts, natural materials, and ancient symbolism to offer a meaningful, environmentally sensitive way to honour a final journey.

Each vessel is made slowly and intentionally, one at a time, allowing space for care, reflection, and respect for the life it is created to hold.

Why a Viking Ship?

Across history and myth, the Viking ship was not only a working vessel but a symbol of passage. It carried people across unknown waters and, in death, was believed to carry the dead safely between worlds. The ship represented courage, continuity, and trust in the journey ahead.

In funerary traditions, the ship was a threshold rather than an ending, a way of marking transition with dignity and purpose. Its form speaks to movement rather than finality, making it a powerful symbol for those who wish to honour death as part of a wider cycle.

Materials and Making

Each ship is woven using willow grown here and harvested sustainably. The hull is shaped by hand into flowing, boat-like lines that echo historic longships. No moulds or templates are used, meaning every vessel carries subtle variations that reflect both the material and the maker.

The shields lining the sides of the ship are individually hand-turned. These circular forms reference protection, identity, and belonging, and each one carries its own grain and character. Together they create rhythm, strength, and a quiet sense of watchfulness along the hull.

The head and tail stock are carved by us in our workshop. Inspired by traditional Viking animal motifs, these elements give the vessel its presence and direction. They mark both the beginning and the end of the journey, grounding the woven body with solid, sculptural forms.

Sail and Personalisation

From the centre of the vessel rises a simple mast and sail. The sail motif can be customised to include personal symbols, colours, or markings that hold meaning for the individual being honoured. This might reflect a life lived close to the sea or land, a spiritual belief, a story, or a quiet personal emblem.

The sail becomes a focal point of the vessel, transforming it from a general form into something uniquely personal.

Use and Ceremony

Designed specifically to hold cremated remains, the willow Viking ship can be used in a range of ceremonial settings. It may be placed at the water’s edge at dusk, carried into woodland for a quiet ritual, or form the centre of a memorial gathering where stories are shared and then released.

Made entirely from natural, biodegradable materials, the ship offers an environmentally responsible alternative to conventional containers, allowing remembrance to align with care for the wider world.
