At Westcountry Willows, we make beautiful, natural funerary pieces by hand in our off-grid workshop in County Roscommon.

Our work includes handmade willow coffins and willow vessels for ashes, created using traditional willow-working techniques and natural, renewable materials.

We believe that the things we use to mark the end of a life can be simple, beautiful and meaningful.

Willow Coffins

Our willow coffins are individually handmade to order using carefully prepared willow.

Each coffin is woven by hand, from the base and sides through to the lid and handles. Because they are handmade, every coffin has its own natural character, with variations in colour and texture that come from the willow itself.

Willow is strong, lightweight and renewable, making it a natural choice for those looking for an alternative to conventional coffins.

Our coffins can be used for natural burial or cremation, subject to the requirements of the chosen burial ground, funeral director or crematorium.

A Natural Choice for Burial

For people choosing a natural or woodland burial, a willow coffin can sit naturally within the landscape.

Our coffins are made from natural willow and without unnecessary synthetic materials. The simplicity of the materials and the handmade nature of the coffin complement the principles of natural burial.

Every natural burial ground has its own requirements, so we recommend checking with your chosen burial ground or funeral director before ordering.

Willow for Ashes

We also make willow Viking ships for carrying ashes.

These are approximately 1.2 metres long and are individually woven by hand. They can provide a distinctive and symbolic way of holding or transporting ashes, particularly for families looking for something connected to nature, craft and tradition.

Made by Hand

Our funerary work grew from our love of traditional basket making.

We prepare and weave each piece ourselves in our workshop in County Roscommon. The process is slow and hands-on, from preparing and soaking the willow through to the final weaving and finishing.

We don't mass-produce our coffins or funerary pieces. Each one is made individually and with care.

A Personal Farewell

Choosing a coffin or vessel for ashes can be a very personal decision.

Some people are drawn to willow because of its natural appearance. Others value the connection with traditional craft, renewable materials and the landscape.

Whatever your reason, we are happy to talk through the options and answer any questions you may have.

If you are arranging a funeral, we can also work with your funeral director to make sure the coffin is suitable for the arrangements you are making.

Ordering a Willow Coffin

Our willow coffins are made to order.

To make a coffin to the appropriate size, we will need:

• The person's height

• The width at the widest point

• The required date

• The delivery or funeral location

Our standard handmade willow coffin is €1,600.

We ask for a 50% deposit when placing an order.

Please contact us as soon as possible if you need a coffin, as each one takes time to make and the willow needs to be prepared before weaving.

Westcountry Willows is a husband-and-wife willow-working business based in County Roscommon.

We make traditional and contemporary willow work, including baskets, living willow structures and funerary pieces, and we teach willow weaving through workshops.

Our funerary work combines traditional craft with a simple, natural approach to saying goodbye.

We are proud to make everything by hand in our own workshop and to keep these skills alive through our work and teaching.
